How to License Music or Affiliate with HFA

Steps for licensing cover songs, obtaining larger-volume licenses, or becoming an HFA-affiliated publisher.

1. Licensing Cover Songs (Fewer than 2,500 Units)

If you're looking to license cover songs in limited quantities, you can obtain mechanical licenses through HFA’s Songfile®.

If you're licensing more than 2,500 units of a musical work, you’ll need to create an HFA Licensing account.

  • Songfile licenses must be pre-paid at the time of purchase.
  • eMechanical licenses require quarterly royalty reporting and payments. Instructions will be provided after account setup.

3. Becoming an HFA-Affiliated Publisher

If you're interested in having HFA represent your publishing entity for U.S. mechanical royalties, an application is required.

Commission:
HFA retains a 15% commission on royalties derived from licenses it issues, unless otherwise specified.

Important:

  • You must self-administer your publishing to create an HFA account.
  • If your compositions are already administered by another publisher, contact that publisher for royalty-related questions.

  • Complete the online general information form
  • Select the administration services you'd like HFA to handle
  • Review the Publisher Affiliation Agreement
  • Submit your application fee via PayPal
